Time-Limited Parent Skills & Education Group

Wednesdays 8:30am-10:00am (Eastern USA) via Zoom

Dr. Armida Rubio Fruzzetti & Briana Carbone, LICSW

This group is intended for parents whose teen and adult children struggle with emotion dysregulation and related problems.  The group will be semi-structured, including both education and skill teaching/learning and individualized applications to parents’ own families. The overall goals are to help parents manage their stress and burden better and to help parents build, or rebuild, loving and effective relationships with their children. These groups will be limited to 20 participants to enhance learning and practice.

The group will be organized into 2 modules, each for 9 sessions (18 sessions total), and will include:

Module 1:  June 21-August 16, 2023

o   Understanding the transactional model of emotion dysregulation

o   How chronic emotion dysregulation in children (including suicidality, self-harm, substance use, etc.) can create stress- and trauma-related reactions in parents

o   Strategies and skills to reduce stress- and trauma-related problems, and to reduce fear

o   Skills to manage difficult emotions (shame & guilt, sadness/grief, anger, hopelessness and other emotions)

o   Manage emotions, repair, and reactivate relationships

o   Inhibit invalidating responses and start to bring curiosity and love to our relationships (rather than negative reactions and judgments)

  Module 2: September 13-November 8, 2023

o   Understanding our children’s experiences, even when they are different from our own or what we might expect

o   The role of validation and how to do it, even under duress

o When, and how, to observe limits (e.g., to say “no”), and when to be flexible; weave in self-validation

o   Different approaches to problem solving, with emphasis on establishing collaborative problem solving whenever possible

o   How to accept reality, especially when we don’t like it

o   Self-care and self-validation; skills as lifestyle choices
